Vina Chocalan Gran Reserva 'Origen' Carmenere, Maipo Valley, Chile
Readers rated this wine:
Concentrated, fresh, savoury.
Vina Chocalan is a stunning, sprawling and modern family owned winery located in the Maipo Valley, it rests 35-kilometers from the Pacific and is home to the vast majority of their production. A second estate vineyard site in the San Antonio Valley, a cool climate valley, is perfect for their premium white wines and Pinot Noir.
Grown in coastal granite soils in the Maipo, the Origen range comes from the winery's best sites and this 2018 Carmenere suggests aromas of bay leaf, grilled red bell peppers, charred licorice root, smoked paprika, red currants, black olives white pepper and dried cherries. It's a savoury wine with flavours to echo its nose. Notable concentration and levity, it trails carob and herbal flavours. An excellent example of the variety.
