Da Silva

Naramata Bench

Da Silva Vineyards and Winery Merlot, Okanagan Valley, BC
Readers rated this wine:
Classic, supple, earthy.
The da Silva estate is located on the Naramata Bench and is owned by Richard and Twylla da Silva. Da Silva's story begins in 1955 when the family moved from Portugal to the Okanagan Valley--in 1959 they purchased an orchard. Almost 50 years later, in 2006, the family built a winery and today they draw fruit from 11 different vineyards/growers located in: Oliver, Osoyoos, Keremeos and Penticton.
The winery is also home to The Kitchen at da Silva, where a fusion of Mexican~Portuguese tapas is the theme.
Made from grapes grown on two Penticton sites: the estate Blenheim Hill Vineyard (clay, silt, loam) and the Lazy Dog Vineyard (clay, loam, shale) and aged in equal parts American and French oak (medium+ toast) for 36 months.
The nose is earthy; wild herbs and tealeaf, brown spices, black olive and coffee are supported by forest berry aromas. The entry is supple and remains smooth across the palate. Tangy red fruits are underscored by flavours of herbs, espresso, cigar and spice. The tannins are polished.

The nose is subtle; red plums and currents, salted black licorice and vague notes of tobacco and braised cherries. On the palate bitter chocolate, toasted spice, dried tobacco and plum flavours appear. It's a classic style, nicely balanced and medium+ bodied with integrated tannins.

Made from grapes grown on two Penticton sites: the estate Blenheim Hill Vineyard (clay, silt, loam) and the Lazy Dog Vineyard (clay, loam, shale) and aged in equal parts American and French oak (medium+ toast) for 20 months.
The nose suggests plums, black berries and blueberry, black licorice and vanilla, sweet brown spices and coffee liqueur. The palate entry is fresh and it has texture throughout; flavours of red wild berries, spice. tobacco and oak flavours dominate in the mouth. Good length.

Earthy, Muscular, textural. The da Silva estate is located on the Naramata Bench and is owned by Richard and Twylla da Silva. The Pinot Noir comes from vines grown on the Naramata Bench and Penticton West Bench--the Hidden Hollow Vineyard and Lazy Dog Vineyard. It was barrel aged for 24 months in Hungarian oak (40%) and French oak (60%) both medium+ toast.
It has some heft and a slightly more muscular bearing than many other BC versions--rich forest floor earthiness is wrapped in salted sauteed beet greens, small tart red berries and peppery spices. It has some texture too; again tangy small berry flavours are layered with spice and tealeaf. It has notable weight and doesn't lack freshness.

Pretty, fresh, elegant. The da Silva estate is located on the Naramata Bench and is owned by Richard and Twylla da Silva. The Pinot Noir comes from vines grown on the Naramata Bench and Penticton West Bench--the Hidden Hollow Vineyard and Lazy Dog Vineyard. It was barrel aged for 18 months in Hungarian oak (50%) and French oak (50%) both medium+ toast.
More delicate than the last vintage I tasted (2019) this 2021 is so pretty; cherry and cranberry, ground star anise and vanilla, cedar chips, forest floor and hits of violet adorn the nose. It is silky and has notable levity and freshness. Balanced, refined and elegant it has powdery tannins on the finish.
