Chateau Canada

Bordeaux

Chateau Canada Merlot & Cabernet Sauvignon, Bordeaux Superieur, France
Readers rated this wine:
Toasted, savoury, classic.
The back label explains the curious name of this estate and the Frenchman who once owned it. He'd spent time in Canada some two hundred years ago and was so taken with our homeland he brought the name back to France.
The Chateau is located 15 kilometers north of Bordeaux.
I review this wine year after year, and see its variations.
The 2019 leads with chocolate and cherries, red and black currants, vanilla, leather, pencil shavings, licorice molasses and dried flowers. It's ripe but fresh, savoury with restrained fruit and a long tobacco flavoured finish.

The 2018 suggests chocolate covered cherries, vanilla, pipe tobacco and baking spices with lashings of cedar and dried rose petals. Cocoa, espresso, spice and charred oak flavours are layered with dusty plums. It's a classic wine; this vintage has notable grip and a toasty/savoury character.

Brooding, firm, intense.
The back label tells explains the name of this estate was thanks to a Frenchman who once owned it. He had spent time in Canada some two hundred years ago and was so taken with it he brought the name home.

This vintage shows distinct aromas of pencil shavings, black currents and plums, leather and cocoa, espresso and an underlying note of roasted green bell peppers. The palate is chocolaty and brooding, the vintage showing positively after several less than quality ones. Firm and intense, ripe and rich, with fine but textural tannins.

When you review a wine year after year, it's pleasing to see vintage variation, which means there's more honesty in the bottle. It also means not every year can be a good one, however, this wine still offers great value in the Bordeaux category.
The 2015 is more austere and benefits from decanting.
Expect plummy aromas woven with currents, graphite, leather, mint, spiced cocoa and hints of vanilla. The mouth is where the restraint really comes in, there is some subdued fruit but its dominated by pipe tobacco, leather, spices and cocoa flavours; dusty tannins wrap around the palate. It is medium-bodied and straightforward; the finish is fresh.

I review this wine year after year, and see its vintage variations, the 2016 stands out as one of the best of recent vintages.
Expect a pretty nose; sweet plummy and cassis aromas woven with orange peel, licorice, dried rose petals and baking spice. It is supple and fresh with great levity. It is medium-bodied and balanced with smooth tannins and more than decent length. Delicious.
