Silky, levity, precision.
Made from Pinot Noir grown on the Black Sage gravel bar; the grapes were hand harvested and then split into two different tanks. The grapes in both tanks were destemmed; one tank was foot-treaded and the other experienced a light crush of whole clusters and was punched down. Fermentation was spontaneous and on the skins for 2-3 weeks. The wine underwent malolactic fermentation and spent 11 months in new (20%), second fill (40%) and neutral (40%) French oak barrels.
Buchanan describes his small cuvee wines as: sustainable, honest and progressive, producing wines with personality and a purity of flavour.
He uses indigenous yeast, minimal amounts of sulfites, no enzymes and no temperature control; the wines are unfined with little to no filtration.
This Pinot is outstanding; spicy cherries, leather, tealeaf, purple flowers, and cocoa with freshly turned soil aromas. It's a clean wine, with precision and excellent pinosity. Silky and high-toned it has notable length and levity.
