Kim Crawford 'Wild Grace' Chardonnay, Hawke's Bay New Zealand
Readers rated this wine:
Complex, spicy, succulent.
While Chardonnay never went out of style for many, this resurgence of interest in the variety is making for some very interesting styles - generally less overt oak, more freshness but also reductive styles and those with a lot of lees contact and stirring. It all depends on the winemaking style.
This select parcel Hawke's Bay version, underwent fermentation with wild (indigenous) yeasts, then it went through partial secondary fermentation and lees stirring. Expect succulent aromas of smoked spices, apple walnut turnovers and dried pear slices, grilled lemons and sweet butter slathered on toast. It is juicy and creamy, bright and complex with a subtle toasted spice finish. Wonderful. ©copyright 2017 Daenna Van Mulligen
