Black Sage Vineyard 'Pipe' Okanagan Valley BC
Readers rated this wine:
Black Sage (formerly Sumac Ridge) currently makes three red table wines, plus this fortified red wine, made like a Port wine it's called Pipe. It is made of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Part way through fermentation, high grain alcohol is added to not only stop fermentation but to prop up the alcohol (in this case at 18-19%), which results in a fortified dessert style wine, which goes great with chocolate or blue cheeses.
With it's age it is mostly dried fruits on the nose; dried cherry, prune and fig with toasted spice, toffee some chocolate shavings and nutty undertones. The palate is rich but not heavy, it has good acidity to keep it fresh and fine tannins to give it texture. The flavours are tobacco, mocha and fruitcake soaked in rum.

Black Sage Vineyard Cabernet Franc, Okanagan Valley BC
Readers rated this wine:
Sumac Ridge has renamed and relabeled its wines from the iconic Black Sage Vineyard in the South Okanagan near Oliver. Planted over 20 years ago by previous Sumac Ridge owner, Harry McWatters, this vineyard was a turning point in BC's wine evolution - especially that of red wines.
The wines are made by Jason James and the label now stands independent from Sumac Ridge. Currently they produce four wines: Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and the well-known Pipe, a fortified, Port-style dessert wine.
The nose emits blueberry and raspberry, vanilla, violets and baking spices with pepper, carob and a core of leather and dried herbs. The palate is equally enthusiastic with plush blueberry, raspberry and mocha. Substantial but fresh - good balance and length.
Delicious.

Earthy notes dominate and are followed by black wild berries, rhubarb, dried herbs, pepper, iodine and plummy tones. The palate is supple and offers mocha, brown spices and leather. Good depth and richness with balanced acidity.

Powerful, earthy, savoury.

The Cab Franc is wild black currants, chocolaty and spiced with mint and savouy spices. It's a highly concentrated and extracted style with plenty of oak playing the lead.

Intense peppery spices, grilled red bell peppers, raspberry tea, vanilla, red currents, dried flowers, cocoa and wild forest berries demand your attention. The palate is textural and juicy, approachable but with good varietal typicity and ticks all the boxes.
