Rupert Wines 'Protea' Cabernet Sauvignon, Western Cape South Africa
Readers rated this wine:
Succulent generous, approachable.
Protea is South Africa's national flower, and an abstract is screen printed on the bottle, which makes for quite a beautiful package. This is the second vintage the Protea wines (they also have a Chenin Blanc) have been available to us in BC and I think this vintage is trending upward. Value is key, but it's also a tasty Cabernet; aromas of cassis pencil shavings, chocolate, sun-ripened cherries and baking spices lead to a core of leather and tobacco. It rolls out generous fruit and spice but is not a one-trick-pony, there is a decent savoury quality at its heart. Approachable but well-balanced. ©copyright 2017 Daenna Van Mulligen
