Rupert Wines 'Protea' Chenin Blanc, Western Cape South Africa
Readers rated this wine:
Value, zesty, fresh.
If you've ever been to South Africa then you will have seen the King Protea. A flowering plant, Protea Cynaroides is found in southern regions and is the national flower of the country.
Protea wines, in their lovely abstract screen-printed bottles are brought to you by Anthony Rupert Wines. All offer incredible value; this Chenin Blanc and a Cabernet are less that $15 in BC Liquor Stores and now there is a pretty rose as well
Anthonij Rupert was founded on the L'Ormarins farm in Franschhoek, whose winemaking history dates back to the 17th century. Originally it was owned by the late Anthonij Rupert, who passed away in 2001. In 2003 it was taken over by his brother Johann, who named it in his honour.. They now have a portfolio of farms: L'Ormarins in Franschhoek, Rooderust in Darling, Riebeeksrivier in the Swartland, and Altima in isolated Elandskloof.
A consistently friendly wine, the 2021 shows lemony notes woven with yellow fruits, wildflowers, grilled baguette, starfruit and crushed stones. It has a creamy character but is also zesty and quite Sauvignon Blanc like in the mouth. A perfect weekday white with a marzipan flavoured finish.
