Stoneboat

Okanagan Valley
Oliver / Osoyoos

Stoneboat Vineyards Pinot Noir, Okanagan Valley BC, 2010
Readers rated this wine:

Grown on the rocky, calcium-rich benches of the Black Sage, south of Oliver, this fabulous Pinot Noir offers fragrant aromas of cherry and raspberry, sweet spices, cedarbox and violets with a core of rainforest floor, sage and white pepper. It's fresh and silky on the palate, it has an elegant, feminie character and plenty of juicy; high-toned red fruit underscored with leather and cedar flavours. The finish is clean and trails fine spice flavours.

Stoneboat, on the Black Sage Gravelbar in Oliver, is now owned by Rudy Verhoeff and Kyla Richey, former professional volleyball athletes. They also own Valley Commons, is a winery established in the District Wine Village in Oliver in 2021. Both wineries fall under the Verhoeff Group of Companies, which is headed by Paul Verhoeff, Rudy's father. The family also owns a flooring company, a brewery and restaurants in the Fraser Valley.

Pinotage is South African variety (Cinsault crossed with Pinot Noir) has its fans and its critics, but when you talk about this rare variety in British Columbia, Stoneboat is usually the first to spring to mind.
It's been a decade since I've tried this wine and it's remained true to it's past.
Expect notes of tar and cherries, black chocolate and leather, salted licorice and charred strawberries with toasted spice. It has a savoury palate; salty and herbal with cocoa, red berries, toasted spice, leather and bacon fat. Fresh with bitter undertones.

It's a wonderful blend of exuberant strawberry and sweet blueberry aromas, carob and peppery spices with grilled wild herbal notes. Expect smooth dark carob and berry flavours, roasted coffee beans and smoked spices. Good intensity and balance to keep it bright on the palate.

Stoneboat Vineyards Reserve Pinot Noir, Okanagan Valley BC
Readers rated this wine:
Bright, juicy, fragrant.
Grown on the rocky, calcium-rich benches of the Black Sage, south of Oliver, this reserve estate Pinot Noir offers raspberry tea, vanilla and red currents, spice and botanical, with distinct notes of bacon fat, on the nose. Equaly savoury in the mouth, you can expect that smoked meaty character with spice and tealeaf. Silky and stylish, fresh and delightfully correct.
Pair: roasted beets, smoked salmon, pork belly, squash ravioli, mushroom risotto.

Savoury, spicy, silky. Roasted strawberries, oodles of spice, rubber tires leather and forest floor aromas roll into a palate of bacon fat, dried fruits, and oxidative flavours. There is an underlying freshness here, and classic silky texture.
