Second Review: June 2022
Red plum and white pepper notes are woven with bay leaf, charred licorice root, black cherry, vanilla, espresso, dark chocolate and bay leaf. It has a fleshy palate and plenty of peppery spice flavours layered with smoked sausage, leather, coffee and cocoa. Nice freshness all around, with sooty fine tannins.

Sweet, fragrant, generous
The entire Escorihuela 1884 series has seen a facelift, the new label is more elegant, but not a huge departure from previous vintages.
The Syrah is always a favourite in the lineup and it stays true to that in the 2019. Sweet black raspberry and vanilla, licorice root and violets, plush chocolate and vague salty undertones are expressed on the nose. It has a jubilant palate, fleshy sweet berries, hints of white pepper and mocha. It's still youthful, so there are some edges, but overall it's a balanced wine with notable concentration.
A solid partner for game meats, roasted wild mushrooms, aged cheeses and cheese fondue.
Pairs great with Gone Crackers Olive Oil & Cracked Pepper

Escorihuela '1884' Malbec Reservado, Mendoza Argentina

Second Review
Smoked plums, blackberries, dark chocolate and espresso, dried herbs, smoked bell peppers and spice rub. The palate is similarly spiced, meaty and savoury. It has very good structure and balanced acidity to keep it from being brooding. Supple texture and good length. A wine for meat or hard cheeses.

Chocolate, pepper, espresso.
A nose dominated by toasted oak, dried herbs, leather, peppery spices, dark roasted coffee beans and bittersweet chocolate wrapped tightly around a core of black fruit. The palate leads with sweet blackberries and plum but is similarly dominated by oak. A wine, which needs the dense protein of beef or hard cheeses to soften some of the firm but ripe tannic structure.
Pairs great with Gone Crackers Parmesan & Rosemary

Escorihuela '1884' Reservado Malbec, Mendoza Argentina
Readers rated this wine:

Not surprisingly it looks like another successful vintage for the very reliable, 1884 wines.
The Malbec is extremely approachable and yet offers substance too. It leads with aromas of black plums and black raspberries, peppery spices and dark mocha atop savoury notes. It is smooth and full on the palate - flavours of spiced plum and ripe dark berries are layered with, finely ground black pepper, rich coffee and dark chocolate flavours. It's nicely balanced and the tannins are supple. This is a wine that will please those who are new to wine as well as those with a more seasoned palate, equally.
Pair with grilled meats, savoury stews or chili or portobello mushroom burgers.
