Rupert Wines 'Protea' Cabernet Sauvignon, Western Cape South Africa
Readers rated this wine:
Expressive, ripe, value.
Protea is South Africa's national flower.
These two new wines, this Cabernet and sibling Chenin Blanc, offer good value, in an attractive screen-printed package.
Expect plenty of sweet cassis and plums atop licorice, chocolate, baking spices, pencil shavings and leather. The palate offers ripe berries, toasted spices and pipe tobacco, which make for a sweet yet savoury palate.
Overall, good balance, very drinkable, with a long spicy finish.
Pairs great with Gone Crackers Canadian Chedder & Chive

Rupert Wines 'Protea' Chenin Blanc, Western Cape South Africa
Readers rated this wine:
Value, zesty, fresh.
If you've ever been to South Africa then you will have seen the King Protea. A flowering plant, Protea Cynaroides is found in southern areas of South Africa and is the national flower of South Africa.
Protea wines, in their lovely abstract screen-printed bottles are brought to you by Anthony Rupert Wines. All offer incredible value; this Chenin Blanc and a Cabernet are less that $15 in BC Liquor Stores and now there is a pretty rose as well
Anthonij Rupert was founded on the L'Ormarins farm in Franschhoek, whose winemaking history dates back to the 17th century. Originally it was owned by the late Anthonij Rupert, who passed away in 2001. In 2003 it was taken over by his brother Johann, who named it in his honour.. They now have a portfolio of farms: L'Ormarins in Franschhoek, Rooderust in Darling, Riebeeksrivier in the Swartland, and Altima in isolated Elandskloof.
A consistently friendly wine, the 2020 is restrained; candle wax and starfruit, lemon balm yellow apples, green almond and wet stone aromas dominate. On a fresh palate expect dried apricot and citrus peel flavours with strong earthy undertones.

A consistently friendly wine, thisi Chenin doles out pristine aromas of starfruit and lemon drops, peaches and spring flowers. The palate is equally precise and juicy; crunchy fruit and tangy citrus flavours mimic the nose. This wine has it all, balance, weight, concentration and a lovely clean finish.

A consistently friendly wine, the 2021 shows lemony notes woven with yellow fruits, wildflowers, grilled baguette, starfruit and crushed stones. It has a creamy character but is also zesty and quite Sauvignon Blanc like in the mouth. A perfect weekday white with a marzipan flavoured finish.

Readers rated this wine:
Energetic, pristine, mouthwatering.
Protea is South Africa's national flower, and an abstract is screen-printed on the bottle, which makes for quite a beautiful package.
This is the second vintage the Protea wines have been available to us in BC and I think this vintage is trending upward.
Value is key, but it's also a very energetic white. It is fruity and floral; crisp orchard fruits, Asian pears, honey, freesia and zesty exotic citrus notes dominate the nose. It is fresh, and like the nose, wonderfully pristine on the palate. It has nice focus and a mouthwatering character.
Very drinkable as an everyday white, but not simplistic.
