Enoteca Bacco

Abalone Cape Shiraz, Western Cape South Africa
Readers rated this wine:
Value, fragrant, fresh.
Made in the Western Cape by Alsatian flying winemaker, Julien Schaal who produces wine twice a year--once in his home of Alsace and again in South Africa.
Chocolate cherries and vanilla, red plum and licorice with brown spices and sweet chocolaty undertones.
Chalky cocoa tannins rest on the palate along with red fruits, fresh earth and peppery spices. It has a modern/classic Shiraz character and notable acidity.
A perfect weekday red priced with value in mind.

Readers rated this wine:
Fragrant, expressive, intense.

The nose offers black cherry, black raspberry and tea leaf, alongside chocolate spice cake and vanilla. The entry is supple, dry, dusty tannins pull in and hold across the palate. Again chocolaty flavours are layered with fruit and white pepper but it's fresh. The finish is quite powerful.
Pair: Roasted meats, game, hard cheeses.

Readers rated this wine:
Fragrant, fresh, pleasing.

Consistently reliable and food-friendly and a pleasure to review, this Montepulciano treads that delightful line between elegant and rustic. The 2019 shows sweet red cherry and a hint of raspberry, star anise, dried rose petals, pipe tobacco and leather. It has a Medium+ body and lovely freshness; cherry and fine spice flavours dominate the palate. It's an pleasing sipper, but will pair so well with dinners of roasted meats, game, hard cheeses, or veggie burgers, pizza or grilled mushrooms and eggplant.
Pairs great with Gone Crackers Olive Oil & Cracked Pepper

Rustic, stylish, reliable.

Consistently reliable, this Montepulciano offers cherries, wild raspberry and spice with straw, tea leaf, cocoa and iodine. It's leaner than last vintage but still smooth and stylish, yet rustic. It has plenty of acidity with tangy red fruit, tobacco and fine spice flavours.
Pair: Roasted meats, game, hard cheeses.
