Sandhill 'Small Lots Program' Merlot, Okanagan Valley BC
Readers rated this wine:
Toasted, earthy, spiced.
Made from the Sandhill Vineyard Block C1 fruit, this Merlot spent 20 months aged in American oak barrels before bottling.
The 2011 vintage was not a great one overall - cooler than average made it for more vineyard management.
The nose offers earth and is heavy on the toasted oak. Brown spices, roasted espresso beans, burnt tobacco and the barest whisper of blackened fruit. The palate has similar heavily toasted oak, burnt spice and bittersweet cocoa.
Overall very disappointing, bitter flavours and oak dominance completely overwhelms the fruit.
