Phantom Creek Estates 'Red', Okanagan Valley, BC
Readers rated this wine:
Profound, intensity, rich.
Oliver's Phantom Creek 2016 Edition Estate Red blends Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon (25%), Cabernet Franc (17%), Syrah (4%), Petit Verdot (4%) and Malbec (2%). Select barrels were chosen for the blend; it was matured for 18 month in French oak. Opaque garnet in colour its warm rich nose is described by black cherry, cassis, wet cedar, licorice root and fleur de sel atop charred eggplant, molasses, chocolate and balsamic notes. The palate has notable intensity--it's profound and laden with slick purple and black fruits underscored by cocoa. The balance and structure is memorable and it has a fresh and lengthy salted licorice flavoured finish.

Phantom Creek Estates Becker Vineyard Cuvee No.27, Okanagan Valley, BC
Readers rated this wine:
Muscular, grippy, earthy.
Oliver's Phantom Creek Estates is owned by China-born Richmond-based businessman Richter Bai, who purchased the Phantom Creek and Becker (formerly owned by Harry McWatters who named it the Sundial Vineyard) vineyards in 2016.
From there a winery was erected, complete with guest center and restaurant. Kobau Vineyard on the Golden Mile bench sub-GI was purchased next and was followed by Everden Vineyard in Cawston in the Similkameen Valley, and recently a parcel on the Skaha bench sub-GI.
In 2021 Mark Beringer of Napa Valley joined the team as Director of Winemaking; he works alongside French consultant Olivier Humbrecht MW.
The Becker Cuvee is 55% Cabernet Franc, 28% Merlot, 9% Carmenere, 7% Syrah and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. It has an earthy character and notes of charred spice, black plum and blackberry, Turkish coffee, dried sage along with vanilla and leather. It's a muscular wine with good freshness o the entry, which leads to a grippy mid-palate Toasted oak, spice, and black chocolate flavours dominate. Decanting recommended.

Succulent, supple, fresh.

From there a winery was erected, complete with guest center and restaurant. In 2021 Mark Beringer of Napa Valley joined the team as Director of Winemaking; he works alongside French consultants Olivier Humbrecht MW and Philippe Melka.
The first 100% Cabernet Sauvignon released in the estate series (from the Black Sage and Golden Mile vineyards) was aged in French oak (60% new) for 18 months.
Black currents and grilled black plums, pencil shavings and leather, dark chocolate, tobacco and vanilla aromas lead to a fresh and succulent palate with a supple weight and excellent structure. Charred spice, black fruit and espresso flavours dominate; the tannins are superfine and have a sooty character.
