From Artisan Wine Co, the Fork in the Road wines represent a white and a red - both blends. This one is named "Oliver Block 212 White" and it is a blend of Chardonnay, Semillon, Muscat, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Blanc.
It is an aromatic wine with layers of peach, apricot and tangerine, vanilla cream and a dusting of sweet spice. Mouth-watering acidity lifts the palate, flavours of stone fruit and citrus peel, vanillin oak and exotic spice. It is lengthy and zesty with spice flavours remaining long across the finish.

A 2008 trip to South Africa sold me on their Chenin Blancs (I just wish we got more here) and it's diverse styles. Chenin can be bracingly crisp and fresh, lush and leesy or ripe and toasty - depending on the producer and winemaking style.
The Spier is a fresh style - a fruitcup of creamy pear and guava with a hint of dried pineapple, citrus blossoms, grass clippings and chalky minerality. The palate is crisp, with just a kiss of sweetness, snappy tropical fruit, citrus, soft mineral and herbal flavours linger. Clean and zesty - a great value!!

Just released, this brilliant, cranberry-hued rose is a laden with bright strawberry, blackberry and cherry aromas, cigarbox and fine spice with just a whiff of confectionary. It's a dry rose with plenty of tobacco and cigar, spicebox and tart red fruit flavours - it's crisp with a toasty edge and spice lingers on the finish.
This will be a perfect wine to serve this summer on the patio with your chicken salad, salmon or cheese course.

Made from a mouthful of varieties starting with Riesling and followed by Kerner, Gewurztraminer, Shcoenberger, Muller Thurgau and Pinot Gris this aromatic melange entices you with a fruit-cup of stone fruit, pear and rich tropical fruit, lime leaf and sweet spice, a hint of herbs and exotic flowers. Signorello Vineyards estate blend white combines Semillon with 40% Sauvignon Blanc.
It is a succulent, aromatic medly of pineapple and melon, wildflower honey and lanoline, clover and minerals with lemon oil and menthol notes. The palate is potent - voluptuous and weighty with flavours of quince, honeycomb, melon and warm spice. The texture is slick, it has a long toasty finish trailing flavours of spice and citrus peel in its wake.

This delicious Cotes du Ventoux red, blends Grenache and Syrah to make make a savoury wine.
Aromas of raspberries and plums, mocha, sunbaked earth and tobacco with a core of garrigue, raw meat and peppery spices.The palate is spicy - cherry, berry, leather and earthy flavours dominate. It is juicy, it has simple, old-world complexity and a peppery finish.

A treat for Chardonnay lovers this rich version smells of butterscotch praline, caramelized pear and juicy melon, vanilla and sweet spice. It is a creamy wine with ripe tropical fruit and citrus flavours with plenty of toasted oak, roasted spices and especially clove lingering on the finish.
It is an obviously toasty style but it balances the oak nicely.

The Pacific Breeze "Produced and Cellared in New Westminister BC from USA grapes" wines (clearly stated on the front label) are across the board - well-made and substantial.
This Killer Cab will seduce dessert lovers with its plum and rich cassis aromas, espresso, hazelnut, molten chocolate and warm toffee notes with a with a hint of Bananas Foster. It is concentrated and supple with ripe berry flavours, loads of spice and espresso. The texture is powdery with dry, cocoa flavoured tannins.

Here is your Monday-Thursday pasta wine - a Montepulciano D'Abruzzo with rich warm aromas of cherries and espresso, a hint of iodine, leather and sunbaked earth and a core of chocolate shavings and dried herbs. The palate reflects the aromas - chocolate and savoury spices, plum and cherry flavours, just a suggestion of dried fruit with char, cigarbox and spice lingering on the finish.
A simple, juicy and smooth weekday dinner wine.

This Malbec is blended with 16% of Argentina's "other red grape" Bonarda and 12% Syrah. It persuades you with sweet cherry and blueberry aromas, warm spice, vanilla, chocolate and hints of tobacco leaf. The palate is fresh, there are plenty of ripe berry flavours, espresso and spice with a savoury backbone. A supple, well-made wine with good acidity and a long smooth finish.

This delicious Mendoza Cabernet is a crowd pleaser.
Aromas of sunwarmed cherries, cassis liqueur, sweet spice and vanilla, mocha and a hint of mint to brighten it. It is juicy in the mouth, there are plenty of berry flavours supported with oak spice, cocoa and tobacco. Expect great acidity, a slightly powdery texture throughout and smooth tannins on the finish.

This unoaked Chardonnay is made from organically farmed grapes.
You can expect a lot of creamy, ripe notes of pear and spiced stone fruit and exotic floral notes with herbal hints and dried pineapple. There is a lot of complexity here - you might assume it is an oaked wine - with a creamy, smooth texture and flavours of pineapple and tropical citrus with a mineral edge.The finish is crisp, tart and citrus-y with lovely acidity.

I visited this winery in Scansano in Tuscany on a blistering hot June day in the summer of 2008. In fact there was no winery, it had yet to be built. But I did tour the vineyards and sat to taste some wines made from grapes of the sourrounding vineyards. Needless to say I was happy to see a wine from Poggio Morino being imported locally.
This is a simple but delicious pasta wine made from Sangiovese, Syrah and a bit of Alicante. Expect aromas of cherries, leather and earth, cigarbox, fine spice and hints of dried flowers. The palate is smooth, fresh cherry/red berry flavours are supported by mocha, spicebox and sunbaked earthy tones. The finish lingers with flavours of toasted oak and spice.

A dark ruby in colour the Misterio Malbec releases primary smoked aromas - char-grill, meaty tones and spiced cocoa layered with blackberry, warm raspberry and toffee notes. It is smooth, medium-full bodied and peppery with plenty of savoury and sauvage flavours, mixed berry and mocha. The finish is juicy and lingers with flavours of cigar box and fine spice.
A good value weekday wine for hearty meals.

Enticing aromas of Damson plums, mint and blueberry, plush spice and molten chocolate with an appealing hint of bell pepper from the Cabernet. This is a fruit forward Shiraz with layers of blackberry, cherry and a whiff of blueberry, plenty of chocolate and dark roasted coffee with a core of peppery spice notes. That dark, roasted theme follows through on the palate - it is savoury and spicy with juicy red and black fruit, grilled herbs and vauge meaty flavours linger with spice on the finish.

This crowd-pleasing red will get you through the party season without breaking the bank.
Ripe summer berries - blueberries and raspberries - chocolate and vanilla, floral and vague herbal tones. The palate is creamy and warm on the tongue, the berries, vanilla and chocolate return with cedar chips and espresso and plenty of spice flavours lingering.

This DOC red bend of Castelao, Touriga Nacional and Cabernet Sauvignon hails from the southerly Atlantic region of Palmela on the Setubal Peninsula in Portugal.
Aromas of smoky summer berries and plummy notes with hints of purple flowers, savoury wild herbs and coffee grounds. It is spicy and savoury - concentrated berry and roasted coffee flavours dominate the palate - it has bright acidity and a long spiced finish.
Pair with rich pastas and smooth, strong cheeses.

Made solely from Signorello Vineyards Napa Valley Estate fruit, this fantastic Cabernet Sauvignon (blended with 18% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc) is sexy to say the least.
Enticing aromatics - rich cassis and sunwarmed raspberry, saddle leather and graphite, shavings of dark chocolate and dried tobacco leaf. It is a potent wine, rich and almost brooding - it layers silky fruit, molten chocolate and espresso, warm spice and hazelnut flavours. A concentrated wine, chewy and lush with powdery tannins and fine spice lingering on the finish.

This very limited release, Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot is an impressive wine with plenty of chocolate and espresso, blueberry, cherry and plummy aromas, smoke, grilled herbs, tobacco and tar with licorice hints. The palate is supple with sweet fruit, carob and dark roasted coffee flavours, it is juicy, well-balanced and satisfying with sweet, chewy tannins.

The bracing acidity and zesty style of Australian Riesling seems to be a love it or hate it thing - I am huge fan of this style...
Expect vibrancy- aromas of lemon marmalade, lime blossom, gripping minerality and a faint whiff of marzipan. This racy white pops with mouth-watering acidity - unending citrus flavours dominate the palate followed by a steely/mineral finish.

Made from vines that are a minimum of 50 years old, this Argentine Malbec provides sweet chocolate and blackberry aromas, smoke, cherries, vanilla and warm spices with earthy undertones. Van Westen's red is a plush blend of 67% Merlot with 33% Cabernet Franc.
It is a dense wine, laden with black fruit and ripe raspberry and chocolate with sweet vanilla, saddle leather, a hint of earthy/savoury aromas and a core of dried fruit. Made from Pinot Blanc with 'just a dash' of Pinot Gris the Van Westen Vivacious is a delightfully smart and snappy wine. Aromas of orange blossoms and tree fruits, honey and citrus peel abound. This concentrated blend of Malbec with 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Syrah will impress you as much as it's new neck-tag label.
President Juan Peron and his wife Evita were fond of one of Escorihuela's red blends in the 1940s, this wine pays homage to that era with its broad and powerful characteristics - aromas of smoke and bittersweet chocolate, rich black fruit and a savoury core of green olives, roasted herbs and grilled meat. A dense palate with a lot of depth, layering black fruit, espresso and dark cocoa with plenty of spice. The texture is powdery, almost granular, the tannins are chewy and the finish lingers with flavours of toasted oak.
A brawny wine that will benefit from cellar time.

A new label adorns this bottle and you'll see it at the upcoming 2009 Vancouver Playhouse International Wine Festival. Now this is a wine that screams summer!
Always one of my favourite aromatic BC blends, the Hatfield's Fuse features a funky new label, even more delightfully cartoonish than the last.
A melange of perfumed varieties combine to release a fruit-cup of aromas liberally spiced with vanilla syrup, honeysuckle and tangerine. The palate is creamy and vibrant, spicy and slick with sweet fruit and vanilla flavours.

The Meomi Pinot Noir has a brooding intensity that reveals aromas of black cherry, cedar chips and dried flowers with a heart of forest floor and rich dark earth. A velvety palate unveils ripe cherry, spicebox and vanilla, the finish is bittersweet and smoky with a good dose of cedar.

Like it's siblings Emotivo Pinot Grigio and Montepulciano this blush-rose offers a straight forward sipper, simple and very affordable.
It is blushing pink in clour with peachy, berry aromas, a hint of soft floral and a spritz of citrus. It is crisp on the entry with friendly maraschino cherry, peach and citric flavours. It's not a dry rose by any stretch, but a nice dose of acidity on the finish helps to cleanse the palate.

Summerhill Pyramid Winery has released a new series of labels featuring the artwork of wildlife painter Robert Bateman. The Cipes Sparkling Rose is one of those new labels and it is made from certified organic Pinot Noir grapes. The wine has a pretty, rosy hue and fragrant aromas of mixed berries - raspberry, blackberry and strawberries in vanilla cream, violets with hints of toast. The palate is juicy and exuberant echoing its aromatics with berry, crisp citrus and toasty flavours. The finish is long and bright, calling out for spicy stir-frys or triple cream cheeses.

Another well made wine in Pacific Breeze Winery's (made in Canada from US grapes - as stated on the bottle) portfolio, the Vin de Garagiste is a nod to their own "garage winery" in New Westminister's light industrial area.
A blend of Bordeaux grape varieties it has affluent dried cherry and prune, plump berry, chocolate and espresso aromas with a hint of peppery spice. The palate is full and as rich as the nose - juicy cassis, a hint of blueberry and layers of tobacco, spiced cocoa and coffee. The finish is lengthy with firm, ripe tannins.Very enjoyable.

This made in BC from California grapes (as stated clearly on the label) Chardonnay is not a shrinking violet and I recommended it only to those who like their Chardonnay oaky.
A rich golden colour, it has overt aromas of butterscotch brulee, ripe pineapple, wild honey and warm spice with a hint of orange creamsicle and a leesy core. It is big and bold on the palate with plenty of tropical pineapple, exotic spice, vanilla and caramel flavours. Toasty oak and oak spice dominate and don' let go across the finish line. it burms pretty hot on the finish too with 14.3% alcohol.

One for the barbecue.
Aromas are cherries in vanilla and plums with sweet spice followed by savoury notes - sauvage, roasted herbs, mocha and char grill. The palate entry is fresh with a mix of tart red fruit and berries before the savoury layers kick in - grilling meat, smoke and dried herbs. The finish is smooth the flavours meaty, the oak just peeks through but does not overwhelm the wine.

This is a young and fresh Merlot from one of BC's newest producers.
It is also a very fragrant version with appealing aromas of sweet raspberry and cherry, a hint of menthol, a whiff of crushed floral and vanilla with warm chocolate at the core. The palate supplies lots of berry flavours, it is bright and juicy in the mouth and continues along with vanilla and sweet spice flavours - oak char and cocoa linger across the finish. The finish is long with fine tannins.

The Chardonnay grapes that make up this wine come from Signorello's 30 year old estate vines, hence the label Vieilles Vignes.
It is a gorgeous version - laden with creamy pear and toasted, nutty aromas, a hint of melon and fire roasted marshmallow. The palate is rich and toasty with layered flavours of pear, sweet spices and praline...it has nice acidity and those warm, exotic spices lounge on the finish.
Nice elegance and the oak is deftly balanced with fruit.

This is a wine to sink your teeth into - dense and chocolaty with currents and black raspberry aromas, rich dark earth and warm spice, tobacco leaf and pencil shavings. The palate is voluptuous, weighted with sweet, plump fruit, cocoa and espresso flavours. It is a big, supple wine with smooth tannins and exotic spice lingering on the finish.

You may be surprised to see a common grape variety printed on an Italian wine label, but forget about it and move on to enjoying this well-priced and delicious Merlot.Tenuta Villanova was established in 1499, the grapes that go into this wine are estate grown and it offers very good value.

It is a very fragrant wine with an abundance of sweet plums and black raspberry aromas, cedarbox and violets with dry earth and grapey undertones. The palate is supple, round and spicy. Rich fruit, cocoa and roasted coffee bean flavours dominate followed by hints of tobacco and plenty of spice which lingers across the finish.

You cannot deny the price tag on the Gallo Family wines - they are easy drinking with at least some varietal character and the Pinot Noir is impressively tasty.

A dream for new-world Chardonnay lovers, this version from the San Antonio Valley provides plenty of caramel aromas with roasted pears and apple pie and a toasty core of butternut praline. The Graham Beck is a traditional method (Method Cap Classique) South African bubbly made from almost equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. It is typically a toasty style with impressive power and a rich golden hue. Aromas are yeasty/leesy with apple pie and citrus, it has a creamy mousse and full, complex palate with caramel and ripe pear, roasted nuts and citrus flavours. The finish is impressive - long and toasty.
Great as an aperitif or with appetizers but it will hold its own against fish and lighter protein dishes.

Aptly named Motherlode Merlot (see details below) I was impressed from the fisrt sniff. This wine is spicy and peppery initially, red berries and red plum aromas follow, vanilla and mocha then savoury notes of grilled herbs, earth and smoked/meaty hints. The palate is smooth and bright with plenty of spice and juicy berries and layers of cocoa and tobacco. The finish is long, spicy and quite chewy.

Chardonnay lovers need no introduction to the Morning Fog, its fresh, juicy style and affordable price is appreciated.

This Cab from Australia's new darling region of Margaret River is by no means shy to express its genes. What I mean by that is this - it fully expresses those characteristics intrinsic in Cabernet, whether you are a fan or not.
It is a savoury wine with primary green aromas - roasted bell peppers and smoked olives, plenty of peppery spices and tobacco leaf with warm chocolate and rich cassis. It is medium-bodied with red fruit flavours followed by the same savoury flavours you initially get on the nose. The finish is juicy and leaves you with flavours of cigarbox and fine spice. It's not an awkward wine, overblown and fruity but it would be a chic pairing with savoury, protein based dishes.

There were only 333 cases of this delicious 2008 estate grown Pinot Gris made.

Inniskillin Okanagan's fearless winemaker Sandor Mayer's 'Discovery Series' wines are smaller quantity, less common (to BC) varieties, some of which may forge a path for future plantings in BC's wine country.

Primary chocolate, plum and forest berry aromas with undertones of tobacco leaf, peppery spices, roasted bell pepper and wild herbs. The peppery spices jump out on the palate with layers of dark berry, char, smoke, sunbaked earth and oak spice. This is a wine that is sturdy, dense - almost chewy - with nice acidity and firm tannins on the finish.

The Vintner's Blend is an amalgamation of Zinfandel grapes from an assortment of vineyards around California. This affordable Burgundy releases pretty aromas of sweet cherry, vibrant raspberry and pristine mountain stream minerality with cedar and forest floor notes. The entry is juicy - tart red fruit leads the way followed by cigarbox and fine spice with composty, leafy notes and white pepper on the finish. It starts out a bit vague but grows more powerful across the palate and throughout the finish.

The Les Christins is an impressively satisfying blend of Grenache with 20% Syrah that offers very good value for your money.
Expect concentrated aromas of rich chocolate and black fruits, leather and spiced, roasted meat undertones. The palate is supple and layered with flavours of cherries and brambly berries, sweet spice, cocoa and hints of vanilla. A full-bodied wine with bright acidity and a lengthy, espresso flavoured finish.

A great value weekday meal wine, this white Cotes du Rhone blend of Grenache Blanc, Viognier, Bourboulenc and Roussanne is a savoury and aromatic medley. It releases notes of tart lemon, quince marmalade and beeswax, stone fruit, minerals and wild herbs. The palate is quite oily, weighted but bright with plenty of citrus peel, mineral and marzipan flavours.
A unique wine that partners well to dishes with mushrooms or lemon-herb butter sauces.

Made from Cabernet Sauvignon with a good dose of Cabernet Franc and small amounts of both Carmenere and Syrah, this dense wine provides aromas of rich dark berries, smoky cocoa and vanilla wrapped around a core of roasted coffee beans, toasted oak and tobacco. The palate is full and almost chewy, laden with spiced chocolate, dark espresso and leathery flavours and dark fruit. Expect a balanced wine with nice acidity and powdery tannins on the finish.

Don't let the "dry" on the label confuse you, this Henkell is more sweet than dry, but that shouldn't be a deterrent.
Ripe apricots, honey and citrus blossom aromas, mouth-filling mousse and loads of sweet fruit with grapefruit flavours on the finish.

A very good value, this fresh Malbec oozes sweet red berries and mocha, dark earth and savoury herbs with a core of fruit cake.The palate echos the aromas - it's quite chewy and features layers of dried fruit, espresso, cocoa, spice and leathery/earthy flavours. The finish is impressive - lengthy, and the tannins from the mid-palate smooth and taper off at the end.

This Viognier is an energetic bottle of fun that releases pretty aromas of peaches and Asian pear, soft floral notes and very subtle spice. The palate is juicy (with impressive concentration for the price) and flavours of tart citrus and stone fruit. It has a long, solid and spicy finish. Pair with fish in mildly spiced sauces or light curries.

The 120 series of Santa Rita's portfolio provides very affordable, consumer friendly wines. This one shows classic Merlot typicity - plush black cherry and plummy aromas with a heart of chocolate, dark earth and bay leaf. It flows smoothly across your palate, has a nice round texture and rich flavours of dark fruit, cocoa, vanilla and sweet spice. Spice flavours continue on the finish alongside a trace of dried herbs.
